HUH?
Oh, Come On Now! What is this, Really?
40th is an Institute for two reasons.

First, so that people would feel comfortable donating old bikes, scrap metal, tools, etc. (The main ingredient for odd bikes is old bikes.)

Secondly, so that people would feel more invited to come and work their projects here. What sounds better? “I’m going to work on my 18 seat tandem at the Institute.” or, “I’m going to work on my Roman slave bike at Shawn’s garage.”

Is the whole idea tongue in cheek?
YES! But;
People LOVE being shareholders. When ever the topic comes up in public our shareholders who have donated material and gotten their stock certificate jump up to identify themselves! They are part of a community.

And the donations! In our first year we received $2000 in seed money from donations of equipment to be sold on craigslist. Our supply of old bikes is growing beautifully.
Is the Institute a bunch of vaporous HooHa with no official standing?
Utterly! But imagine this. An entire organization, with growing membership, completely dedicated to FUN and occasionally turning out an odd bike. This is something that people want to be part of!
